Text Box: Irish Water Spaniels at Work
Working Irish Water Spaniels are something of a well kept secret in the shooting world, on our shoot the guns invariably have no idea what they are let alone that they can make good, honest gun dogs in the right hands. They are nevertheless always an excellent talking point.
Although classified as a retriever in the three countries (UK, Ireland and USA) where they have a presence of any significance, their versatility as an all round gun dog means that they are used for a variety of purposes in the UK. Our two dogs for instance, are used mainly on formal driven shoots, Niamh usually joining the Springers in the beating line flushing game for the gun and Feargal as a picking up dog.
Niamh, has also been used for retrieving during the 2006/07 shooting season.
Feargal has had his first experience of inland wildfowling on the flooded
Great Ouse washes in the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk fens.

UK working Irish Water Spaniels are used as ours are for flushing game and as picking up dogs on formal shoots, they are also used for flushing and retrieving game for rough shooters and of course, as they were originally intended, are used as wildfowling dogs.

This picture shows little Niamh waiting patiently in the sugar beet for some action.
